Your risk profile

Who Should Consider Preventive Cardiology?

A preventive cardiology evaluation may be helpful if you have:

  • A family history of heart disease or early heart attack

  • High blood pressure

  • A history of smoking

  • Multiple cardiovascular risk factors

  • High cholesterol

  • Diabetes or prediabetes

  • An elevated coronary calcium score

  • Concerns about your heart health even if you feel well

A clear starting point

Understanding Your Cardiovascular Risk

Your evaluation starts with your medical and family history, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, lifestyle, medications, and other cardiovascular risk factors. When appropriate, we may also consider additional tools such as ApoB, Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], or coronary artery calcium scoring to better understand your individual risk. The goal is simple: understand where your risk comes from and determine what can reasonably be done to reduce it.

Personalized care

An Individual Approach to Prevention

Your prevention plan will depend on your individual risk factors and may include:

  • Cholesterol management

  • Blood pressure management

  • Nutrition, exercise, and weight management

  • Diabetes and metabolic risk reduction

  • Smoking cessation

  • Medication when appropriate

  • Cardiac testing when it would provide useful information

Not everyone needs cardiac testing. When testing is appropriate, we offer echocardiography, exercise treadmill testing, stress echocardiography, and nuclear stress testing through our practice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Preventive Cardiology

What does a preventive cardiologist do?

A preventive cardiologist evaluates factors that can increase the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke and helps develop an individualized plan to reduce that risk.

When should I see a preventive cardiologist?

You may benefit from an evaluation if you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or prediabetes, a strong family history of heart disease, a history of smoking, an elevated coronary calcium score, or several cardiovascular risk factors.

Do I need heart testing if I feel well?

Not necessarily. Preventive cardiology begins with your history and risk factors. Cardiac testing is considered when it is likely to provide information that could meaningfully affect your care.

What are ApoB and Lipoprotein(a)?

ApoB and Lipoprotein(a), also called Lp(a), are blood tests that may provide additional information about cardiovascular risk in selected patients beyond a standard cholesterol panel.

Can I schedule preventive cardiology without insurance?

Yes. Cardiology & Geriatrics Associates offers self-pay preventive cardiology consultations. A new-patient cardiology consultation with ECG is $350.
